monster squad

UPDATE 7/08: Yes, plans appear to be underway for a Monster Squad remake, as it has been listed on IMDB. We’ll let you know when/if we receive confirmation of a green light.

While Andre performed in over 100 commercials and television shows and movies over his career, he is probably best known for The Monster Squad, a cult classic that 20 years later enjoys fans who are in many cases children of original fans.

The 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD sold out nationwide minutes after release in July 2007, requiring a second print run to fulfill demand. To date the dvd has soold over 175,000 copies with virtually zero promotion. Pick up your copy (if you can find one!) to enjoy a remastered film along with special features such as a documentary, deleted scenes, interviews with the cast, and cast commentary.

Want to see Monster Squad at your local theatre? Call them. Better yet–tell them you want Andre and the cast in person.

Released August 14, 1987, The Monster Squad premiered in 1,280 theatres nationwide, pulling in $4,000,000 at the box office during just a two-week run ($286K/day). Once the movie hit video and cable, fans rabidly clung to beat-up and brand new copies of the movie, watching them so many times that today fans still complain that their copies are completely worn out. Few movies have such a dedicated following 20 years later.

Til now, fans satiated their Monster Squad fix by purchasing old copies on Amazon.com and Ebay, where bidding usually drove the price to $70 and beyond. Others have viewed various Monster Squad clips online at places like YouTube over 100,000 times. And of course, there are the bootleg copies, which also fetched top dollar.

Andre, Ashley Bank, and Fred Dekker at Alamo Drafthouse in Austin for the first reunion screening in April, 2006

In 2006, Ain’t It Cool News brought the cast and the director together for a first-time-ever reunion at the world-famous Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. It was there that the DVD fan demand petition was cast. More theatre reunions followed, along with convention appearances, to celebrate 20 years of the Squad, leading up to a the DVD release and subsequent Comic Con screenings and signings in 2007.

Much like Office Space–which was not given enough time to find its audience during a short box-office run only to become a top-selling DVD with the same kind of dedicated following Monster Squad has always enjoyed–the DVD release of The Monster Squad is expected to find its way into the hands of the original diehard generation of fans, their friends, & children today.
